A Pole Vaulter's Story

"Beyond the physical requirements for the pole vault, courage, commitment and discipline are the necessary ingredients to achieve one's potential."
Kory Tarpenning
1. Up to this point, I am concentrating on accelerating well over the last four strides of my run and having a high and early plant with an aggressive take off. Hitting the box hard with maximum controllable speed is the objective. After takeoff, I am concentrating on driving all the way through the takeoff to establish the penetration of the vault. I do this by letting my chest lead the way as if someone was behind the pit with a rope attached to my uniform and I am being pulled by them. I am trying to remain solid with my upper body, and to keep my left arm from collapsing, i.e. not pushing it out but rather not letting it collapse. My objective is to try and penetrate all the way to the back of the pit.
